Coal and Petroleum Geology Section
Coal
A wide range of information in coal geology, coal resource and coal quality assessment, and coal mine maps is available through our publications (online and printed) as well as online data to industry and citizens of Illinois. If you have special questions, please contact the section head, David Morse.
Additional expertise is available on coal cleaning, coal conversion into high-value products, coal analysis, mine subsidence, various environmental aspects of coal mining and utilization especially within the Advanced Energy Technology Initiative, and from engineering geologists in the Quaternary and Engineering Geology section.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Resources
The Illinois State Geological Survey aids industry exploration and development of petroleum and natural gas resources in Illinois. Staff scientists work to identify and map the distribution and structure of oil-producing geological units and to characterize the properties of oil reservoirs.
This structural information is used to develop and recommend improved methods to increase oil recovery from Illinois' mature oil fields and to improve and manage underground gas storage reservoirs. (Illinois' capacity for underground gas storage dwarfs all other states; daily gas deliverability from storage ranks fourth among the states.) Interpreting and transferring geological information to oil and gas companies through workshops is an essential function of Survey staff.
