Fall Adventure Day in Burnham Park, Chicago
The Chicago Park District will host a Fall Adventure Day in partnership with the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) on Saturday, October 11, 2014, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Northerly Island Visitors Center in Burnham Park, Chicago.
Many educational and entertaining activities for adults and children will be offered near the Northerly Island Visitors Center located at 1521 South Linn White Drive, Chicago. Take this opportunity to learn how to kayak or to improve your skills. Visit with a coastal geologist to learn how Lake Michigan beaches form and change and how Northerly Island was constructed. Paint with your choice of natural muds to create a unique picture. Learn about the geologic time scale and see rocks, minerals, and fossils from Illinois. Discuss Great Lakes invasive species with biologists who work to minimize their impacts. Try your hand at archery and hit the target. Listen as a historian tells the intriguing story of the 1933 World’s Fair held at the park.
This free event is funded, in part, by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Management Grant with funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Grant monies were also used to print A Walking Guide to the History and Features of Burnham Park, which blends and explains the geologic, natural, cultural, and historic aspects of the park. These guides will be available to the public at no charge.
No need to register for the trip, as the event is free of charge. Please join us! This trip is funded, in part, by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Management Grant with funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Other divisions of the Prairie Research Institute to participate include the Illinois Natural History Survey, the Illinois State Archaeological Survey, and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center.
