Guided by the National Geodetic Survey, Height Modernization is the establishment of accurate, reliable heights using global positioning satellite (GPS) technology in conjunction with traditional leveling, gravity, and modern remote sensing technologies. Activities are designed to provide long-term benefits for the environment, help to prevent loss of life, improve property estimates, and save money.

Project participants include:
Illinois State Geological Survey,
Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Water Resources,
Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association, Illinois State Water Survey, and also National Geodetic Survey, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the
United States Geological Survey .
The ISGS received $300,000 for Year 1 activities through the NGS Height Modernization Program with assistance from Congressman Timothy Johnson.
The ISGS received $725,000 for Year 2 activities through the NGS Height Modernization Program, championed by Congressman Timothy Johnson and Raymond LaHood/ Congressman Aaron Schock.
The ISGS received $800,000 for Year 3 activities through the NGS Height Modernization Program, championed by Congressman Timothy Johnson, Congressman Aaron Schock and Senator Dick Durbin.
The ISGS received $3,500,000 for Year 4 project activities through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) State Planning and Research (SPR) program and the Illinois Department of Transportation in conjunction with the NGS Height Modernization Program.
