How to View the Natural Gamma-Ray Logs Database

The natural gamma ray logs are available in Portable Document Format (PDF) and can be down loaded to a computer or viewed in a Web browser using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Logs are available only in the highlighted counties.

Important Tips

Your Web browser must have frames and Javascript enabled
Use Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the logs.
It is not possible to bookmark the map views; bookmark the main page instead

How to Use the Interactive Mapping Interface

Map manipulation tools are located on the left side of the interface. The currently selected tool is outlined in red. Data layer visibility and activation controls are located on the right side of the interface. The natural gamma-ray log layer must be set to active status to view a geophysical log.

Step 1: Zoom in to a county of interest
The Zoom In tool is selected by default when the interface is launched. Boreholes with natural gamma-ray logs are shown in yellow.

Step 2: Use the “Select Within Records” tool to view the attributes of a layer
Attribute data for selected borings are listed in the lower frame of the map interface. Attribute fields are described at the bottom of the page.

Step 3: View the digital image using the Hyperlink tool
A digital image of the log can also be viewed by selecting the text in the PDF field.

Interface Navigation Tools

Overview Map

Turn the Overview Map on or off. The map is displayed in the upper left corner of the map frame.

Zoom In

Enlarge the map image by clicking on a spot or dragging a rectangle around the area of interest.

Zoom Out

Reduce the map image by clicking on a spot or dragging a rectangle around the area of interest.

Hyperlink

Graphically select a single log from the natural gamma-ray log layer. A separate file-viewing window appears to display the digital image if you have downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Select Within Records

Graphically select multiple records by dragging a rectangle around the area of interest. A table of attribute information pertaining to the active layer will appear. For the natural gamma-ray log layer, a link for viewing or downloading each file is also available within the PDF field.

Clear Data Selection

Unselect all selected features.

Pan Map View

Drag the map image so that the area of interest is shifted within the view.

Previous Extent

Return the map view to the previous zoom level and location.

Zoom to Full Extent

Zoom out the map view to the fullest extent of all data layers, in this case, the Illinois state boundary.

Print Map View

Submit a map title when prompted. After submitting the title, a new window opens that contains a formatted title, map image, and legend suitable for printing. Use the browser print button to print the map.

Legend or Layers

Toggle between the layer list and the map legend. The layer list enables the user to set the active data layer and also set the display of individual data layers to be on or off. The legend is a graphical representation of the symbology of all visible map layers.

List of Attribute Data

API Number: A unique number assigned to the boring by the ISGS
Well Name: The name given to the boring by the geologist in the field.
Quarters, Section, Township, Township Direction (TWP Dir), Range, and Range Direction (RGE Dir): Components for legal description of a boring's location More information on how well locations are described in Illinois.
Elevation: Ground surface elevation in feet.
Quadrangle: The 7.5-minute quadrangle where the boring is located
Total Depth: Total depth of boring
