EDMAP Project

EDMAP Area

Available free for download only.

The EDMAP program supports geologic mapping by students of Illinois universities and is funded in part by the U.S. Geological Survey. These student maps are made available as a courtesy to the participating universities, and are available only as downloadable graphics through this website. EDMAP products are formally recognized in the ISGS EDMAP series to provide students and faculty with a means to permanently reference their mapping efforts and to further encourage Illinois' academic institutions to participate in this worthwhile educational program. These maps, although supported by the ISGS, do not necessarily comply with ISGS cartographic standards, and are not subject to formal ISGS review.

The USGS EDMAP program provides for: 1) broad education in geologic mapping and field analysis through the support of field studies, 2) development of academic programs that teach earth science students the fundamental principles of geologic mapping and field analysis, and 3) training the next generation of geologic mappers.

Competitive grants are written annually by academic institutions, and university dollars are matched with Federal dollars. Proposals are reviewed by a panel consisting of university representatives, geologic discipline scientists, a contract representative, and a state geologist. EDMAP is integrated with Federal (FEDMAP) and State (STATEMAP) components of the program. Since 1995, EDMAP has funded hundreds of students from well over 100 universities in the United States. The maximum funding per graduate student is $15,000.00 and undergraduate student is $7,500.00.
